Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development Awards $464,920 in Municipal Planning Grants

MONTPELIER, Vt. –  The Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development announces the support of 29 municipal planning projects totaling $464,920 dollars.  The Municipal Planning Grants support a range of projects around the state intended to stimulate economic development, grow housing opportunities, and ensure adequate public infrastructure.

“My experience in community and economic development has taught me that local solutions are the answer,” said Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development Commissioner Katie Buckley.  “Municipal Planning Grants provide resources to get good ideas off the ground.”

For over 30 years, Municipal Planning Grants have provided expertise and capacity to help communities tackle a range of issues at the local level.  Demand for this program continues to climb with $960,000 in funding requested from 67 municipalities.

Among 2019’s awards, municipalities have discovered the economic, social, and health benefits of connecting communities through outdoor recreation trails:

  • In the Northeast Kingdom, the grants will support planning for a four-town biking network
  • A similar project led by the town of New Haven in central Addison County seeks to link four towns through a cycling route.
  • Funding will also boost trail projects in Cabot and Woodstock, as well as improved pedestrian and bicycle access in Ludlow, Montpelier, Swanton, and Winooski.
