Plymouth Notch Antique Apple Fest
PLYMOUTH NOTCH, VT -- The President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site hosts the fifth annual Plymouth Notch Antique Apple Fest on Saturday, October 12, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This celebration of the harvest pays special tribute to the apple! Visit our heirloom apple orchard and sample vintage apple varieties. Join the fun of apple tossing and peeling apples with an antique kitchen implement.
The day begins at 10:00 with the second annual Coolidge 5K, a professionally timed road race featuring a new faster, flatter course for 2019! Walkers are welcome to participate in the “I Do Not Choose to Run” 1-Mile Walk at 11:00, honoring Coolidge’s famously short statement that he would not seek re-election for president in 1928. A variety of activities are scheduled throughout the day including wagon rides, sheep shearing, cheese sampling and self-guided tours at the Plymouth Cheese Factory. Enjoy seasonal culinary treats while listening to old-time music by fiddler Adam Boyce. View the work of Vermont craftspeople. Participate in period children’s games on the Aldrich House lawn and visit the one-room schoolhouse for an apple treasure hunt and hands-on history activities. See the special display about the commissioning of the United States Naval Submarine “Vermont” and learn about Henry Breault, the only enlisted submarine sailor to receive the Medal of Honor – presented by President Coolidge in 1924.
The Antique Apple Fest is a great opportunity to explore Plymouth Notch, considered one of the best-preserved presidential sites in the country. Twelve buildings are open to tour. At the Coolidge Museum & Education Center, view the temporary exhibit, “Presidential Menagerie: The Coolidges and Their Pets,” which examines the important role animals played in the private life and public image of the Coolidge family. The pet exhibit was funded with generous support from the Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation. Also investigate the nationally award-winning permanent exhibition, “‘More Than Two Words: The Life and Legacy of Calvin Coolidge.”
