REVOLUTIONARY WEEKEND AT HUBBARDTON BATTLEFIELD
Event features reenactments and depictions of camp life

HUBBARDTON, Vt. –  The July 7, 1777 Revolutionary War Battle of Hubbardton will be commemorated on July 6 and 7, 2024, at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton. Scores of reenactors from around the northeast will set up camps and participate in the largest Revolutionary War living history weekend in northern New England honoring the war’s only battle fought solely in what would become Vermont soil.

The main military battle interpretation will take place on the actual day of the battle - July 7. Sunday’s tribute starts at 8:00 a.m., with troops beginning to form about 7:30 a.m. Plan to arrive early to get your spot near the viewing rope line. You’ll hear muskets firing in the distance before soldiers emerge over Monument Hill.

Weather permitting, reenactors will explain and demonstrate the military tactics used in the Battle of Hubbardton on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. New this year on Saturday, the reenactors present the time near the end of the battle when grenadiers arrive and turn the tide in favor of the British.

In addition to the action on the battlefield, the weekend offers activities for all ages and interests. Visitors can walk through the camps and talk with reenactors. There will be special demonstrations of camp life, stations on colonial cooking and gunsmithing, a colonial shopping experience, and talks and presentations by reenactors and historians. Children can learn how the soldiers drilled and marched, as well as enjoy hands on activities like playing battle with toy soldiers, and making hats, masks, and more. The Division for Historic Preservation will post a complete schedule of events a few days in advance.

Events on Saturday run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The entire Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site and museum are open both days until 5:00 p.m. The museum features a shop that has a robust selection of books and other items relating to the American Revolution.

Admission is $8.00 for adults, $1.00 for children 6 to 14 years old, and kids under 6 get in for free.  This Revolutionary War battle weekend is offered by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, reenactor groups, the Hubbardton Historical Society, and other local organizations and businesses.

The Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site is located on Monument Hill Road, 6 miles off Vermont Route 30 in Hubbardton, or 7 miles off Exit 5 on US Route 4 in Castleton.  The site is typically open 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesdays to Sundays through October 20.
