Careers in Hospitality

Employment opportunities in travel and tourism, which fall into the leisure and hospitality industry, are abundant, diverse and rewarding. In the United States alone, leisure and hospitality jobs are projected to total 15 million in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Globally, tourism has about 235 million jobs – about 1 in every 9 workers.

In Vermont, more than 30,000 people work in travel and tourism positions, which represents roughly 1 out of every 10 workers in the state.

As more visitors seek out and take advantage of Vermont’s abundant outdoor recreational areas and environment, locally grown foods and brews, and artisan, cultural and historic sites, the need for an innovative and resourceful workforce to engage in the hospitality, tourism and recreation management sector continues to grow.

Large and small colleges across the Green Mountain State feature an excellent array of choices in two- and four- year degree programs that ready students for a host of career options that evolve around the travel industry, from hospitality and restaurant management to agricultural tourism.
