Disaster Planning and Response

One lesson learned after Tropical Storm Irene was that the State and our partners in disaster response and recovery needed a consistent way to assess damage and impact to businesses, farms and cultural and historic resources and a centralized location for the information. Such a system would allow for a more collaborative and strategic response and the ability to communicate with those impacted as new assistance programs became available. It would allow us to pinpoint the types of assistance that was needed and ensure that all those impacted were offered support.

Get Involved

Vermont’s tourism industry is a large contributor to the state's revenue, but the success is largely determined by the industry organizations themselves. Visitors constantly experience the Vermont culture from a store clerk to the owner of a bed and breakfast, and everyone in between. General citizens - Vermonters -  can even have a huge impact on the industry as they interact with the visitors, who end up getting to know the people and character of the state. In other words, anyone can get involved in promoting the state.

Careers in Hospitality

Employment opportunities in travel and tourism, which fall into the leisure and hospitality industry, are abundant, diverse and rewarding. In the United States alone, leisure and hospitality jobs are projected to total 15 million in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Globally, tourism has about 235 million jobs – about 1 in every 9 workers.

In Vermont, more than 30,000 people work in travel and tourism positions, which represents roughly 1 out of every 10 workers in the state.
